 Woody has landed!
« Thread Started on May 30, 2010, 5:11pm »

The following video You Tube was created by Woody's foster family, and many of the photos were taken over the last few weeks. Woody has been through a lot, and has had to have a toe amputated, and in all that he has remained a wonderful boy. He needs a home with another dog around, male or female, and a quite submissive male owner, but needs female owners in the family too. He has a real fear of men, but not aggressively, very submissively. He has been traumatised in the past by a male and the memory is a terrifying one. :'( Woody is one gorgeous hound :-* (Jenny - SLR Administrator)

OMG I am in luuuuvvvvvvv :-* :-*
Woody is sooo gorgeous - how anyone can get rid of dogs like this is beyond me >:(
He had to be lifted in and out of the car as he is so scared - but travelled like a dream having his nose tickled.
This boy is going to blossom into a complete stunner.. he is in just the right place to do that ;)

what ..do I come in here??

I think I will creep up here and see what there is..

I am back..

I am still scared ..so I will hang around with you guys.

Thanks for bringing him Kris. ;)

Yep, he is very beautiful- he is a tall lad, probably about 27/28" and well built. He has a big, chunky head, and HUGE silky ears, seriously they're enormous :P and the most lovely markings and eyes. But yes, he's very scared, it is so sad to see. As well as his broken toe, he has scratches on his face and legs, so the thought is he may have been thrown from a car. Either that or his foot was stamped on or something similar. >:(

When he walks around he creeps, like he's trying not to be heard. :'( He was alright when Kris was here, he stood with us, although very quietly and was unsure, and was panting. However when she left it unsettled him and he started wandering around. He came into the living room where there is a large lampshade, and when it started blowing in the wind he bolted in panic and hid in the hall. Then I took him into the garden, where he pulled me to the bottom and was looking around, seemed like he was looking for an escape. :(

THEN when I tried to get him back inside which he was not keen on, the door started to blow shut which made him flip out completely, he started yanking away, just blind panicking and trying to bolt. He pulled his collar half over his head, the poor boy was really terrified. :'( When I got him back in he found a dark corner and has just been lying there ever since (on the wooden floor.) So far he hasn't been to the toilet, eaten or had anything to drink yet. We're going to have to be very careful outside because he'll definitely be off if he gets scared. He's not a happy chap right now.

He's got antibiotics, and his bandage has to stay on until the vets on tuesday. Hmmm, we'll see how long the one he has now stays on. :o He's got the kennel smell, but we can't bath him until later in the week. He is skinny and needs to put on about quite a bit of weight. His declaws have been removed, which indicates he was bred for working- the kennel have said he's cat friendly, but was frightened and subdued there so I think we'll have to check that again later.

He hasn't met our dogs yet, but hopefully he'll be much happier with them around, and they'll boost his confidence. It's humans who have made him scared like this. >:( This boy is going to need lots of time.

And as a little side note, I think it's fate that we've come to foster him- the vet clinic he visited today was in a village called 'Blackmore' (our surname). Spooky or what? ;)

What a gorgeous lad and such a shame to see him so scared :( I'm sure he'll blossom into a confident and carefree boy soon under the care of his new foster mummy and SLR...

Hi Guys, Woody was dumped in a private lane not far from rescue kennels on Sunday 16th May and was spotted on Wednesday 19th by our dog walkers. After that many perilous hours were spent sitting in a field trying to catch him but he would spook and run off. It then became my mission as I noticed he had a poorly paw which was getting worse as the days passed. He was stopping by for his meals then disappeared back to the woods so I knew he was now eating properly and getting medication. My patience eventually paid off as he began to trust me, my cats and border terrier and he followed me through secure gates where I was able to put him in the kennels. He had a comfortable first night in kennels with good food and warm clean blankets on Monday 24th May, 8 days after being dumped. Next morning he was taken to vets, checked over, put on antibiotics and frontlined as he was full of fleas from living in the woods. The Vets are certain his foot was stamped on or possibly run over by car when leaving him as he has broken toe. His huge abcess is however healing beautifully as he has been taken to the vets every 2 days for wound clean and re-dress.

Woody is a very frightened dog but he does not have a bad bone in his body, he has only ever shown me love and affection since I caught him and greeted me with a waggy tail and lick every time I went near him. He is very wary of strangers - men particularly - understandably - and did not like all the people at the vets, but was too big to get on my lap. Every vet vist involved lifting him in and out of the car as he thought he was going to be dumped again - until today when he got back in my car himself after his final vet visit whilst waiting for Kris to collect him. I seriously could have cried and nearly changed my mind about letting him go as I have grown so fond of him as he has to me.

Woody's bandages will be able to come off on Tuesday after he has been checked over by your vets. He only had to keep them on whilst at the kennels to avoid infection and help heal his broken toe. He is not to have to much exercise either or his toe wont mend.

Kennels is no life for a dog and SLR do such a wonderful job - we would be lost without you.

This is one gorgous dog and he will come round with time and patience. He showed no aggression with my own dogs nor other dogs in the kennels and was quite happy to share his dinner with my 3 cats when we were sitting out in the field trying to catch him. He had many chances to chase the cats but did not so is 100% cat and dog friendly, also child friendly too - what more could you ask for.

Please give him a big hug from me and say I am sorry but that is what I do, rescue - rehome and move on to the next one through the door that needs the same attention.

Hear, hear 8-) It doesn't matter how many horrible people there are in the world. They will alway be defeated by the love and kindness of others :-*

I agree with those two, what an angel you are. :-* I was blurry eyed reading that, what a lot he's been through- I'm just glad he's known kindness and love. I hope you'll keep up with his progress- we're all smitten already and we'll take the best care of him (and give him a big hug and kiss from you.) :-* :-*

Just another quick update. Woody stayed lying by the door until everyone came home, but wonderfully he ate all his dinner- I left it by him and went in the other room and he polished off. :D When the rest of the family arrived home, they waited outside with the dogs so they could all meet and go for a walk. He didn't want to move from his spot at all, and I had to pull him right up before he came out with me. He was very nervy and jumpy when we came out, but greeted the dogs quietly and calmly. Not so keen on the people :( he jumped away from mum and rowan, so we just went on with the walk as normal. He seemed to calm down the longer we walked, and although still very wary did have some sniffs of us, and also did a huge poo and wee, so I think he's feeling better now.

When we got back he seemed a lot perkier and was more interested in us all. He seems a lot happier with the dogs around, as we predicted. Ours are all fine with Woody- no special treatment for a new one, they just barge past him and get on with their business :P I think they'll be very good for him.

He's now actually been standing with us, and putting his head in our hands for strokes, which is brilliant and so lovely. :-* He's still wary though and we're being very careful, and odd little things do freak him out- rather like the lampshade, I was walking past with my laptop, and the hanging wires made him jump away in fright. :(
We also can attest to being wary of men- he was enjoying strokes from us girls, but when my dad came to the doorway he went and hid. :'(

But although it's very early days, he's showing the right signs. He's so soulful and lovely, we're all very taken with him- I think this one's going to get right under the skin :o

so glad Woody has made it to his foster home and well done ad thank goodness for everyone who took the time and patience to rescue him, a new beginning for Woody now and better times ahead, hope he will grow in confidence and take things very slowly to trust people again and learn to enjoy the comforts of home life, he is so lovely and it sounds like underneath his nerves and anxiety he is a really friendly, loving boy, we wish him all the best and know he will start to blossom and grow in confidence, lots of gentle love and positive thoughts to him :-*

p.s hope his foot is healing well and all will go ok at his next vet check up x

How sad and >:( it makes me to think some b*****d has made this beautiful hound SO fearful and timid :'( at least he is one of the luckier ones now as he has landed in SLR heaven. Hope he soon realises that he is amongst people he can trust and blossoms into the hound he was always meant to be :-*
Well done everyone involved xx
